From "Performing Writing, Performing Literacy", I took the sentences I underlined and the notes I made about them and put them here.
"To be human, we are reminded, is to speak and write and perform through multiple systems of signification. "
We need to remember this avenue when it comes to expressing ourselves.
How we as humans release thoughts.
"I tend to use non-academic writing as a type of therapy"
It's the best kind there is.
Nothing helps you work through something more than writing it all out.
"Not as much bullshit."
It's so true. If there were no such things as paper length requirements, I'd have a much easier time just getting straight to my point sometimes.
"The in-class writing is restricted to topics that are often not things that I am passionate about while I can always choose to write on my own about exactly what fuels my passions."
I struggle with this too. I need to start taking class that explore my passion.
Finding out who you are...
I'm willing to break rules more often in order to get a specific effect I desire."
This hardly ever happens with academic writing, because you're writing to meet an instructors desire. We write to please others, and I find that crippling sometimes.
"Where does a voice come from?"
That is a damn good question.
"I've always considered myself more a performer than a writer."
I've always considered myself more a writer than a performer.
Some of these might not make much sense. Some times my margin notes hardly make any sense to me.
And some may not have stuck out to you. But I guess you could say these are raw thoughts, just put here for everyone to see. These are really the only thoughts I had while reading this.
This a very good exercise though. I think your doing fine, I should start to do this myself. Its great to once awhile you write your own thoughts down it can come handy for your personal writing.

I highlighted many of the same lines when I was reading this article. I agree that writing (nonacademic) has the potential to be extremely therapeutic. For me, journaling has been a huge factor in self-improvement and processing through hard things, and communicating with others about difficult circumstances is almost always more successful through writing. Additionally, creative writing (poetry, fiction, lyrics) can be the most liberating, and accessible!, form of self expression. It's unfortunate that so many composition classes take the human, emotional element out of the equation. Effectively ruining it.
